Usually three conditions need to be met for someone to steal: Pressure, Opportunity, and Rationalization.
Don't take shortcuts when hiring! Remember to check your state laws, and run background, drug, and credit history reports accordingly.
Try asking for multiple forms of identification at the first interview to rule out identity theft.
You are the business owner, so be sure to generate and check the end of day reports yourself!
Sometimes the most trusted of employees will find a way to rationalize stealing money or altering data.
